Colour/Growth form: Large paddle shaped green leaves on tall slender stems, brownish coloured cigar shaped flowers, grows from a rhizome.
Calathea lutea is an excellent tropical screen as an alternative to Heliconias. It can grow about 2-3m tall and 1m wide, and is adaptable to a range of light conditions from bright indirect light to full sun. The Cuban Cigar Plant makes for a great indoor pot plant or as a filler in tropical gardens. The cigar plant gets its name from its brownish coloured cigar shaped flowers.
